2020 brings us six eclipses — two solar and four lunar (full list in footer) — and the first of these arrives this coming weekend at the time of the Wolf Full Moon in Cancer.
On January 10th, we will experience a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse, defined by TimeAndDate.com as the movement of the Moon through the “faint, outer part of Earth’s shadow” and notes that this type of eclipse is often mistaken for a normal Full Moon. The Penumbral Eclipse begins at January 10th at 17:07:44 UTC and ends January 10th at 21:12:19, coinciding with the arrival of the January Full Moon at 19:21 PM UTC in the sign of Cancer.
Full details of the eclipse can be found on TimeAndDate.com, including an interactive eclipse map available for any location and global lunar eclipse visibility.
The Energy and Inspiration of the Full Wolf Moon Eclipse
At this Full Moon, Seanmháthair Gealach (Grandmother Moon in Irish) is at home: Cancer is the constellation she rules with its qualities of emotion, intuition and motherhood/birthing. She invites you to connect to those parts of your Self, and to call on the your gods, goddesses and allies for support and guidance. At this Full Moon, I will be calling on the goddesses of Winter, including An Cailleach (aka the Hag of Winter), Elen of the Ways and the Deer Mother.
I am not an astrologer, but those who are inform us that the Cancer Full Moon can bring us heightened emotions, vulnerability and sensitivity. When we add a lunar eclipse to that energy, expect all of those emotions and ways of being to be heightened even more. You may feel drawn to solitary pursuits, to feel the need to cocoon and nurture your Self, and perhaps to communicate only with your loved ones. This is moon energy at its peak: deep, intuitive, creative, feminine, and nurturing.
And as this lunar eclipse in Cancer coincides with the Full Wolf Moon (here in the Northern Hemisphere), expect to unleash a howl or two of strength and power, emboldened by the passion, strength and emotion of this moon. After all, we are wild women who run with wolves!

You may find that on this powerful day, you immerse fully into your Self, and (re)claim your deep inner wisdom, as it informs and inspires your soul work and spiritual journey into 2020. TIP: Check in again with that Cancer energy in six months, when we welcome the New Moon in Cancer on July 20 at 17:33 UTC. This is an ideal time to review your journey and what you began at the eclipse.
In the words of Clarissa Pinkola Estés in her classic book Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype, “The things that women reclaim are often their own voice, their own values, their imagination, their clairvoyance, their stories, their ancient memories. If we go for the deeper, and the darker, and the less known we will touch the bones.”
Invite this Full Moon Eclipse to inspire your 2020
Many predict that 2020 will be a powerful year of change. This year is already stormy, fiery, filled with strife and Yang energy, and desperately needs balance from the Divine Feminine / Yin energy within us all.
I recently read that in 2019, Google “searches for heroes — both superheroes and everyday heroes — soared around the world”. It is time for each of us to step up.
This is my invitation to you, a call to action:
Be the hero or heroine in our world in any way you can.
Even a tiny of flicker of light can illuminate our world and banish the darkness. Embrace the full moon eclipse passion and energy. Allow it to inspire you. Ask it how YOU can make a difference. Ask it to reveal what YOU can bring from your Divine Feminine Self to balance and heal our world. Be the change.
In the words of Gandhi,
“If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do.”
And to quote Estés once again,
“One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your own soul.”
Show your own Soul . . . I know I will!
