New Moon in Capricorn

Sunday, January 2nd at 10:33 am PST / 18:33 UTC

The First New Moon of the calendar year is seen by many as an “omen”, a predictor of how a future event will take place, in this case the year 2022. The energies of this New Moon — and those of the world around us in the realms of Sea, Sky and Land — can suggest how the energies of the year as a whole mightmanifest.

Of course, the key word here is might. Like all medicine from the world around us, omens are neither good nor bad. They just are. Nature is neutral. Good vs. bad is a human construct, and perhaps our perspective on that omen — of it being good or bad or neither — can open us up to new inspirations or possibilities.

I believe we have free will, and that what we do with the medicine — how we interpret it, and how we manifest it — is, in my humble opinion, much more important. For instance, if you consider the omen as neither good nor bad, how might that free you to work with its medicine?

And know that even if you can’t disconnect from the good/bad aspect, you can still work with the medicine. For instance, if you see the message as a “bad omen”, what can you do to mitigate it or learn from it? If you see the message as a “good omen”, how can you maintain and work with that energy throughout the year?

Janus and New Beginnings

Did you know that the month of January was named for the Roman god Janus, established by Julius Caesar in 46 BCE? Although many Roman deities were “borrowed” from the Greek culture, Janus was not one of them.

He is the god of many things including Time, Beginnings, Endings, Transitions, Doorways and also War & Peace. He must have been a very busy god! He is typically pictured with two heads, one facing the past and one facing the future. How perfect to begin this year, by looking back for wisdom and looking forward to new directions and energies.

As we begin this new calendar year with Janus, let us ask him for his wisdom… his medicine for us.

And as you ponder his medicine for you, keep in mind the energies and qualities of the New Moon in Capricorn such as focus, perseverance, lofty ambitions, and breakthroughs in one’s transformation.
