Sharing one of my favourite post-Solstice / New Year practices (and yes, I share this every year!!!)
Many of us have cleansing rituals (both sacred and secular) associated with the new calendar year.
For some it’s a simple clean sweep throughout the home, after all the holiday celebrations. For others, it’s a thorough decluttering of closets and drawers, kitchen and bathroom shelves, fridge and freezer, and more.
These are all GREAT ideas! I also like to do a spiritual cleansing in our home to close out the 12 Days of Solstice. This is also perfect to do on the first Dark Moon/New Moon of the year (arriving this Saturday), as it purifies the home from lingering or stale energies, and allows you to embark on all ritual work knowing the house is grounded and magically cleansed!
I normally do a smudge throughout, starting at the front door and moving though each room with a blessing and a smudge, making sure I get into all the corners. This year, I chose instead to asberge with consecrated water and a cedar bough (seasonal respiratory problems getting in the way!).
But sometimes we need a little more — a “real” cleanse — especially because we share our home with two lovely moggies names Mouse and Pearl.
A household cleanser can also be spiritual… organic, non-toxic, and used with intent and blessings.
One of my favourite spiritual / ritual cleansers is this simple DIY carpet powder/freshener. It does use Essential Oils but you can omit if anyone has scent sensitivities or if you prefer to not expose companion animals to EOs.
Spiritual Carpet Freshener
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 tsp fine sea salt
- 1 tsp powdered dried herbs such as basil, thyme, rosemary or lavender (you can mix or use just one)
- 5 drops lemon essential oil (Citrus limon)
- 10 drops lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
Mix your ingredients together and ensure the EOs are evenly spread throughout your mix (you can even glove up and use your fingers to mix). Not a fan of lemon and lavender? Use oils that resonate with you such as orange, sage, tea tree oil, eucalyptus, thyme, or oils from the pine/fir family, etc.
Start the cleansing with an intention, and ask your allies, guides and helpers — and those of the herbs (plants have spirit too!) and oils you use — to join you in creating an energetic and cleansed space, free from lingering energies. Create a blessing or affirmation to use when sprinkling the cleanser. If you practise spellcraft, create something wonderful as you prepare the blend and scatter the freshener.
Start by sprinkling the floors and carpets throughout your space, and allow the powder to set for 10-20 minutes, then vacuum the carpets and/or sweep the floors to remove the freshener (along with dust and pet hair!).
Visualize the cleansed magical space as you make a clean sweep.
